Q: How much protein should I consume daily? Should I consume more for a short period when trying to regain muscle tone that I have lost from yo-yo dieting?
A: There is a variety of dietary philosophies, and each makes use of different amounts of protein, fat and carbohydrates in the daily intake. “Atkins-type” diet involves a lot of protein, where over 50% of the diet could be made up of protein (at the initial stages of the plans). In “Zone-type” plans the suggestions are for 40% of daily intake to be protein, with 30% fat and 30% carbohydrates. In “Low-fat-type” plans, up to 70% of the diet could be made up of carbohydrates with as little as 10 percent fat, leaving little room for protein.
The need to get protein because of “yo-yo” dieting comes with a lot of controversy, but if you are now working out to tone and develop more muscle tissue, then higher intake is suggested. Consult your doctor.
